There is overwhelming research linking the benefits of physical exercise to our mental health. Unfortunately, life's busy schedule can get in the way of the exercise we need each day. Let Salt City Mental Health help you incorporate movement into your week. We are introducing movement sessions that allow you to talk to your therapist while riding a stationary bike. These talk therapy sessions will incorporate movement at your pace. No judgement, no expectations, just you and your therapist spinning while you talk.
How Exercise Benefits Mental Health
Regular exercise can help:
reduce stress
improve concentration and memory
reduce symptoms of a mental health diagnosis such as depression and anxiety
improve sleep and energy
Serotonin, endorphins, oxytocin and dopamine are released by the brain and are often referred to as the "happy hormones". When you exercise your brain releases neurotransmitter's like Endorphins and Serotonin. Endorphins help relieve pain and stress that builds up in your body and create a calming sensation. Serotonin helps elevate your mood, regulate sleep, balance digestion and other bodily functions. Oxytocin is released by the brain when you engage in activities such as engaging in a conversation with a trusted person. The release of Oxytocin has been shown to stimulate serotonin and dopamine and reduce anxiety. Dopamine is the brains reward chemical and is released when you engage in a rewarding activity, like exercise. Increased levels of dopamine help with motivation and a sense of well-being.
